Being a man of Occult as well as Science I have always wondered about Human/ microbial consciousness Not just when it comes to the animals or humans every organic being every autopoeitic cell is conscious. As consciousness can also be defined as an awareness of the outside box well it may also be the world outside the mammalian fur though never limited it is like probably sentience the feeling of being alive. Come to think of it ,I was fortunate enough to see my blood under the microscope magnified. When I saw it, it reminded me of pictures I have seen of the Universe! tht really makes me wonder about their Consciousness as a living cell is it definite with inheritable characteristics if so what makes em different than other living cell or any other complex life form in nature.
Microbial intelligence is always questioned from the formation of biofilms which of course requires joint decision by the whole colony to their reorganization to antibiotic resistance with when need reorganize to to increase the availability of nutrients. Eventually, the gene (or small number of genes) responsible for consciousness will be identified. Then, we can determine for certain if any of the lower animals are also conscious. We think chimps and dolphins might be, but we're not really sure until we see if they have the necessary genes. In fact, the old-timers could be right, and all the other animals really are merely automatons. That would definitely make us "special"!
